Someone Saw It First || Episode 18

In early stages of our development, "borrowed belief" ...when a mentor sees potential in us before we see it in ourselves....is a vital catalyst. But what happens when we get stuck waiting for that external validation?

In this episode of The Private Leadership Reset, we explore the transition from relying on external approval to claiming your owned authority. We break down the "validation loop" that holds professionals back, discuss how leaders can spot "quiet potential" instead of just rewarding polished confidence, and lay out a practical 3-question reset to help you audit your own evidence of capability.

The Weekly Leadership Reset: Three Questions for This Week

Bill Goodwin’s story invites us to examine a quiet leadership tension: the difference between receiving recognition and becoming dependent on it.

Someone else may recognize your potential first. Their belief can open a door. But mature self leadership means learning to trust the evidence you have built since then.

Use these three questions to continue that shift.

1. Looking Back: Who saw you?

Who recognized something in you before you could see it clearly yourself?

Name the person. Identify what they saw. Then consider what became possible because they chose to say it aloud.

2. Looking In: Are you still waiting?

Where are you still waiting for recognition that your own evidence can now provide?

Be honest about the internal friction. Are you seeking useful perspective? Or are you waiting for someone else to give you permission to feel legitimate?

Input can strengthen your authority. Permission can quietly replace it.

3. Looking Out: Who can you elevate?

Whose potential have you noticed but not yet named?

Choose one person. Tell them specifically what you have observed. Give them evidence they can recognize in themselves.

If you can, do more than encourage them. Open a door. Make an introduction. Offer access. Invite them into a room they may not enter on their own.

Recognition does not create potential. It helps someone see the potential that is already there.
