What You Set Aside Is Still Costing You
“Set aside” sounds like a decision.
Often, it is a negotiation that never ended.
In this episode of The Private Leadership Reset, Ryan Watts examines the quiet cost of leaving an important part of yourself unresolved. It may be public speaking, writing, mentoring, candor, creativity, or a version of leadership that once felt more alive.
You did not release it. You did not claim it. You simply allowed life to decide for you.
That unfinished agreement remains active beneath the surface. It reopens when someone asks about it, when you see another person doing it, or when someone close to you says, “You should pick that back up.”
The result is not always obvious regret. Sometimes it appears as heavier decisions, forced momentum, or the persistent feeling that nothing is wrong enough to change yet nothing feels fully settled.
Ryan offers three honest ways to close the negotiation:
- This is complete. I honor what it was, and I am not returning to it.
- This is mine. It has a specific place and size in my life now.
- This waits until a moment I have clearly named.
The answer is yours. The relief comes from deciding.

Reflection question
What have you set aside that is still on your banner?
Choose one thing and ask:
Is this complete?
Is this mine?
Or does this wait until a moment I have actually named?
Do not add another obligation. Close the agreement.
