#188 - Turning Setbacks Into Fuel || When Life Falls Apart, with John Ulsh

John Ulsh was a thirty-six-year-old marathon runner with a young family and a good life. One turn onto a scenic road ended it in an instant. What followed was eighteen days in a coma, forty-five surgeries, and a long stretch in a nursing home where he could not brush his own teeth.

The comeback most people imagine is a straight line up. John's was not. He talks openly here about the anger, the nights that were always the worst, the year he sat still because he was not ready to commit, and the loss of his best friend to suicide. He also talks about the two moments that turned him: seeing his four-year-old son wheeled in on Christmas Eve, and the day his daughter Katie said she missed her old daddy.

The idea that carried him is simple and hard to live: commit to the process, not the goal. Fall in love with the practice, the way a Division III athlete loves practice with no trophy waiting. Learn the difference between pain you cannot control and pain you choose. Give yourself grace without giving up. Ryan and John go deep on all of it, plus what nearly two decades of recovery taught John about leadership, gratitude, and building a life on your own terms.

In this episode:

  • Why John now calls himself an accident survivor first, and what his mission became
  • The full story of the crash and the eighteen days he does not remember
  • The nursing home, the anger, and a pastor's line: you can be pissed off and still be positive
  • "I miss my old daddy," and the day he quit physical therapy to train himself
  • Working out beside a group of teens with Down syndrome, and what they taught him about showing up
  • Pain you can control versus pain you cannot, and why gym soreness felt like a gift
  • Commitment over motivation, and why he never wants a finish line
  • Firing the doctors who told him to be happy just to be alive
  • How The Upside of Down got its title, and why he is giving the audiobook away
